RECENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES AT VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE

An afternoon illustrated program

presented by our own Christopher Ryan

Christopher, as head of the VAFB Cultural Resources Management Team, will share the results of his work at sites revealed during construction mitigation that are shedding new light on Santa Barbara regional prehistory.

The most complex excavations ever performed at Vandenberg AFB exposed seven distinct archaeological deposits along San Antonio Creek dating from 1,400 and 8,600 years ago.  On South Vandenberg, the oldest known prehistoric site yet identified on the Central Coast mainland dated at 10,660 years ago was encountered during erosion control measures at Sudden Flats.
